More than 200 people were arrested in the northern state of Baja California in an attempt to end the protests and blockades of farm workers demanding better wages.
The laborers who work around the town of San Quintin often earn less than eight dollars (120 pesos) per day for harvesting fruits and vegetables. They want their income to rise to about $ 20 (300 pesos) per day, according to some demonstrators.
In a statement posted on the website of one of the organizers, workers require overtime pay, medical services and an end to sexual harassment by their bosses.
The strikes have affected the fertile agricultural area south of the coastal town of Ensenada, where many of the large farms exported most of its products to the United States. Much of laborers from poor southern states like Oaxaca and Chiapas.
Police arrested 200 suspected of vandalism and roadblocks, the government of Baja California reported. In the photographs was possible to see some demonstrators set fire to garbage on the roads.
The authorities offered higher inspections to ensure working conditions of about 1,200 laborers who have no union representation.
The state government promised to keep open the roads and said officials "warned that there will be no tolerance for those who exploit the demonstrations to act outside the law."
The US Consulate in Tijuana said the strikes began on Tuesday and recommended to travelers with caution. The road is the main route on the peninsula.
