scranton pa to el paso, tx
We thought we would go a different way to Texas this October. We need a route through West Virginia and Kentucky that needn't include the interstates and that is scenic and safe.

First, I'd suggest you order the 'Mountain Directory for Truckers and RVers' - Eastern Edition to make sure these highways are suitable for RVs.

It's hard to do both West Virginia and Kentucky east/west on secondary roads in a RV, especially Kentucky. This would be a suggested route for a combo of secondary roads and interstates - beautiful in October with siteseeing options enroute.
2244 miles from Scranton, PA to ElPaso, TX:
I-81 out of Scranton to Winchester, Virginia then 50 west into West Virginia to Junction, WV.
220 south to Covington, VA and on to Daleville, VA
I-81 SW/I-77 to Max Meadows, VA and on to Wytheville, VA and Knoxville, KY
I-75 out of Knoxville into Chattanooga, TN
I-24 North a short distance to Exit 127 and SR64 west into Memphis, TN
I-40 out of Memphis to Little Rock, Arkansas
I-30 out of Little Rock to Texarkana, TX and pick up US82 at New Boston, TX to Wichita Falls, TX to US 277 at Seymour, TX to Haskell, TX - bypassing north Dallas
US277 to US380 West to Brownfield, TX to US 62 to Seminole, TX
US62/US180 west to Carlsbad, TX (Carlsbad Nat'l Park)
Continue west on US62 into El Paso
