14A is not called the "Oh My God!" route for nothing. Believe me, the climb or descent on the west side is truly scary.
14 is the better option, but I can tell you that on your way down, when you pull off to rest at Shell Canyon rest stop, you can smell the acrid odor of hot brakes coming from every vehicle parked there.
As stated above, 16 is much better and just as beautiful.
