I live in Alaska and have traveled the Alcan more times then I can count. The advice given is right. Get new tires on truck, make sure you have a good spare and keep the best used tire not mounted and bring with you. Same on trailer if your not sure have a good tire shop check them and spare. Bring a good used unmoumted for the trailer too. On your way up the Hiway every time you get fuel ask how far to the next fuel, don't get low on fuel your not in "MAYBERRY" any more. As tires go our family, kids, and grandkids 10 vehicles in all run Michelin LTX M/S year round. In the trucking business 43 years and Michelin never let us down. Have a good trip ,take your time and you'll do just fine.
Thanks fishhogg. Best info comes from those who live it, know it. I will take the forums advise and carry spares as suggested.
I've been researching today. I run LT 245/75R17E 121/118R on my 2011 F350 4x4 DRW. I'm down to either Michelin Defender LTX M/S OR Michelin LTX A/T2. Price and max load of 3,195 is the same. Tread on defender is 13.5/32 and LTX A/T2 17/32, so the latter is 2# more rubber weight. The LTX A/T2 is sold as harder rubber to endure more gravel conditions, so it's got a 60,000 warranty, whereas defender is 50,000 mile.
I'm down to reading the reviews on these. I wonder if when you're calling out what you roll with your referring to what Michelin is now calling the Defender LTX M/S?
I'm leaning towards the defender because the rubber is a little softer, which might be better in cold weather, plus they have to be less noise. Tire Rack website categorizes the defender as "all season" and the A/T2 "on/off road". Both are branded with the M/S symbol.
80% of my use is fair weather highway, so I'm leaning towards the Defender and getting some chains if the weather gets brutal.
What do you think?
