- Desert_CaptainExplorer IIII think the bad press on 40 is more weather-related this time of year than about the road itself. Three years ago I drove from Holbrook AZ {we left from Tucson} to Asheville NC on I-40 in 5 days and found it to be an excellent road I would be happy to drive again that went straight to where we were bound, but... We left on May first and other than dodging a few major thunderstorms and a couple of tornados weather was not an issue. :E
You can make pretty good time on 40 but I kept the 24 Class C at 63 - 65 and enjoyed a very pleasant trip. Ended up in Maine for Memorial day and by the time we got home, we had done 22 states and 7,800 miles. Great trip!
:C - Shot-N-AzExplorer40 is my preferred route if I’m in a hurry, and I”m always in a hurry. I’m not understanding the bad press here.
- padredwNomadI apologize! OK follow Busskipper's route through Texas to pick up I-20 and then in Jackson, MS just stay on I-20 to Atlanta or turn off where ever in Northern Georgia you are going.
- HeisenbergExplorerThe wanted route was to north Georgia.
I am confused. - padredwNomadJust to say I like Busskipper's route. It is a route I am very familiar with, and the route I would choose.

Looking for recent info on both routes...construction zones, rough sections (are there any smooth ones??).
I realize 40 is 100 miles shorter but two years ago there were a lot of construction and rough areas.

It will be next week...hard to think about snow when I'm in south Fla.
Thanks
Ken,
you in Florida or Arizona? :?
Guess it really does not matter - I'd plan on I-20 but if the weather is good get onto some State or National Routes along the way.
I-40 is a road I will never take again - if possible - Just not Fun, JMHO. Especially in Oklahoma.
So that leaves I-20, or a lot of side roads. Shoot it was 70 in Denver the other day and the snow has been sparse this year, so weather is just a big ????
Avoid Dallas and Oklahoma City - mabe something like this - This - MAP
Let us know how it turns out.
Best of Luck, - Desert_CaptainExplorer III

Depends on when you are traveling... I-40 is often shut down due to snow during winter storms with it being much less of an issue on I-20.:C

The biggest storm to hit the Sierra's in years is there now and headed southeast towards I-40. They closed I-80 for 100 miles due to 60 - 80 mph winds and 3' of snow. You definitely do not want to be on I-40 anytime soon.
