If you are on the trail and see a bear and have a gun it is better to shoot yourself instead of the bear. You can shoot a burglar or an attacking person. Shoot an attacking bear and you'll go to jail. :h
Here in the Northwest Territories if you have to shoot wildlife in self defence you will not go to jail if you notify the NWT Dept of Environment and Natural Resources as soon as possible. The ENR officer will take custody of the carcass. Here in Canada under our laws you cannot shoot a burglar, if you do the police may place you under arrest. - USMC46ExplorerI have had a close up head on mountain lion encounter in Washington state and a VERY close encounter with a black bear in Alaska; we could have shaken hands ! Both times, I had no defense. I now carry bear spray and a S&W .44 mag Bounty Hunter in a cross draw holster. They may not save me, but I will have a little more confidence if there is a fight. I believe in bear spray BUT..I've been told by some old timers in Alaska that bear spray may, or just as likely may not work with a determined, sick, desperately hungry or injured bear.

There was a bear wandering around the backyard and by the time they got home the babysitter's father had killed the bear in the attached garage. That summer we had bear burgers & stew. There were no more roads between their home and Algonquin PP so wildlife was always there.

How about you are sleeping in bed in your own house and hear this huge bang? And in the morning you see THIS on the window above your head? You know you have a serious bear problem.
We have bear claw marks in the drywall of our cabin here in Yukon. Previous owner had a bear break the window and climb in to eat food in the kitchen. Makes for a good conversation piece...
The first few years we had many bear visits, one day I had five bears around the cabin. But then they got tired of the crazy lady banging pots and pans while shouting at them to move on.
We had a young grizzly hanging around this past summer but he wasn't a problem. The dogs kept him in check. - joe_b_Explorer IIBack in the early 1960s, when I was living in the village of Marshall, Alaska just north of Bethel but on the Yukon River, one of my main hunting buddies was a man known in town as Old Tom. This was as close as any of the villagers could get to his real name. I was about 24 years old and Old Tom was, probably close to 70. Old Tom was bilingual, Russian and Yupik and I was only monolingual, English as spoken in Oklahoma. LOL But Old Tom and I enjoyed our times together, traveling by snow machines, dog teams, snow shoes, etc. I spoke very little Yupik but we somehow communicated.
One evening, sitting around the camp fire he told me that you could trust brown bears as they did what they told you they were going to do. If they acted like they were going to charge, then that was probably what was going to happen. But black bears were the most dangerous, according to him, as even the bears didn't know what they were going to do next. He said it was because, when God (Beaver Man, in Yupik) was making all the animals of the earth, he made too many rabbit brains and when he finished with making the rabbits, black bears were next on his list of animals and so he used the extra rabbit brains in them as well. That is as good an answer as I have ever heard. Current score on bears versus joe b. is joe b. 5 - bears 0. I plan to leave it at that if at all possible. A well seasoned bear roast, next to the mashed potatoes or stuffing, is a real meal, IMHO. - rockhillmanorExplorerWow. I wish I had THAT kind of beautiful scenery with my bear encounters. :B
- Snowman9000ExplorerYeah, that kind of begs the question, where to people in Alaska go to vacation?
And also people from Hawaii?
