On the border between Texas and Mexico there are additional checkpoints several miles into Texas. The usual high tech x-ray vision cameras and who knows what else. I was working on a large (105,000 acres) ranch and commuting from a hotel in Laredo. Drove a pickup rental and wore the usual fire resistant clothes with my companies very common pecten symbol on my shirt. Weeks and weeks of going through the station 6 or 7 days a week. The same routine every time. They watch the monitors while another BP walks the dog around. Then one time I'm asked: where are you going? Huh? Where are you going? I'm thinking I'm an American in America I don't have to tell anyone where I'm going. I about boiled over. Piloncillo Ranch. Where is that? I know he knows. Between here and Catarina. Ok, go on. I was mad about that all day. I still don't like it. Maybe if it happens again.....
They have jurisdiction nationwide and within 100 miles of the border you have NO constitutional rights to refuse to answer or refuse to allow a search, withOUT PC.
If you thought is was bad then, stay away now with the new administration enforcing the law to the letter. We have NO problem with their questions or actions, as they ARE enforcing the law, and we have to go through the checkpoint to go out to dinner or go grocery shopping, so we do see them often.
