I had an interesting experience on the Southern border near Big Bend. We didn't cross, but got stopped at the station inside the border. DW and I had different licenses (my AK license had expired, so I had a Texas license, she had an AK license), we had rented a car in Houston, but the car was titled in Louisiana, and we had two cars registered in Texas from our previous address in Texas with different Texas DL's.
LOT's of questions that essentially forced us to tell our work and residence history for the past 5 years and then turned into "What were you doing in Big Bend?".....to which the honest answer was "checking the box, we'll not come back, dry, hot, dusty."
They eventually let us past....but I think it was good thing we had both brought our U.S. passports out of some niggling sense of worry.
