Monterey isn't really Southern CA, but you can get to So Cal from there. You weren't very specific on the intent of your journey. If you want to stay near the Coast then you'll be taking Highway 1 from Monterey which stays along the coast. It is also two lanes and very twisty. As long as you're a confident driver and not afraid of heights you can do it. Don't be scared off by people who think it isn't for RV's. The only prohibition is motorhomes over 40' can't be on it.
If you're going in the summer, I would suggest avoiding Highway 1 on weekends. There is a lot of traffic on the weekends and you may find yourself pulling into turnouts more than you are on the road. Once you get down past San Luis Obispo then you're fine on Highway 1, but you'll be in So Cal traffic.
