Southern Colorado Hwy 160 east to west

We'll be heading back home to AZ this summer after a trip to Colorado Springs and are considering taking Co hwy 160 west from I-25 to Durango for a more scenic route than I-40 west. Any info on Hwy 160 would be appreciated.

I'm not that familiar with mountain driving, but it doesn't bother to drive slow as needed. I see from Google maps there is a pretty good down grade into Pagosa Springs from the east. But at least the drive looks more scenic than the interstate.

Thanks!

  • Yes the Fiesta toad has aux. brakes (SMI Stay-in-Play). Turning on my hazard blinkers and gearing down and driving slow doesn't bother me.

At 10,856' Wolf Creek pass is a serious climb and decent. Doable but you need to manually gear down so your engine does most of the braking. If you have to use your brakes more than 5 seconds every 30 seconds you need to slow down and use an even lower gear. Does your Ford toad have brakes on it? If not then I would have the DW drive it up and over and hook back up in Pagosa Springs. On the way down there is only one hard switchback that I believe is posted at 25 mph.
A easier option would be 160 to Alamosa, then 285 south to 17, and then in Chama, 84 back to 160. The train at Chama to the pass and back is an interesting trip #6..
  • U.S. hwy 160 is an excellent hwy with beautiful scenery.

You will go over two passes, the first being N. La Veta pass which is only 9300' or so. No problems here.

The one you referred to east of Pagosa is notorious Wolf Creek Pass. It will not be a problem IF you gear down, go slow, pay attention, and not let other vehicle try to get you to go faster. If crowded by others, pull over and let them go.

    Enjoy your trip!
  • Bill, from east to west just out side of South Fork you have to go over Wolf Creek Pass about 12,000 not bad going west. You should have no problem
