Spokane to Idaho, 95 or 195?

Heading down to Great Falls, MT and then across to Spokane, WA and then down to near Troy Idaho. Should we go with the 195 or 95 between Spokane and Troy? I assume bigger grades on 95? Anything to be concerned about?

Thanks.

  • From AB - in the US on I 15 to Great Falls. then west on rote 200 past (near) Missoula and into Idaho . The nicest USFS cg we have ever found is Sam Owen CG ( about 15 miles east of Sandpoint) AT Sandpoint join US 95 and south to Moscow then east to Troy. Lovely drive all the way. Enjoy!
  • Thanks for the advice, we're coming from Alberta and spending some time in Montana first (Great Falls area, then Missoula, and then over to Spokane) as we have a number of days before meeting up with family just outside of Troy for the long weekend.

Both routes look nice and we will enjoy the scenery, but it looks like we are most likely going via 95.

You've both suggested east to Coeur d'Alene to connect to 95 -- is there any particular reason not to go south on 27 from Spokane and then over to 95 at Rockford instead?

Also a question about coming in on 95 when it hits the 6 before Moscow, preference to going east on 6 to 9 & 8 vs staying on 95 via Moscow? Some random pics on street view of the area going east look quite nice. Distance is basically exactly the same.

Okay one more, after Troy we are headed back up via Polson (Flathead Lake) - any reason again to head back the way we came (95) vs connecting to I-90 via state highways 6 and 3?

Thanks again, always appreciate getting the info from people with experience with the area.
  • IMHO (Humble opinion) school in Moscow (8 years) and wife is ID native - 195 from Spokane is boring so - take I 90 from Spokane to Couer d'Alene then 95 south to Moscow and then east on #8 to Troy.
BUt if you do not have a good reason for Spokane - take 95 south from Sandpoint or Bonner's Ferry, whichever comes first. Where are you coming from?? Almost a native to that part of the world so I might have more suggestions.

  • Both are good routes with beautiful scenery. 95 is in Idaho and 195 is in Washington. You'll have no trouble either way.

US95 heads south off of I-90 at Coeur d 'Alene, ID, approx 35 east of the US195 turnoff in Spokane, saving you those miles. BUT if you decide to take 195 south take the turnoff through Pullman,WA to Moscow, ID and Troy.

I went to college in Pullman. Never a bad day in the Palouse.
