State by Stae Sales Taxes

With the sales tax part, I don't see the advantage with NH, as a Canadian every state is effectively a zero sales tax rate.

The tax on diesel is higher because a portion of it, the same with gasoline, is supposed to go to road construction and upkeep, the theory being that diesel transport trucks put more wear & tear on the roads and so should pay more.

There's an old adage - there are only three things governments can tax:
1. What you earn, or
2. What you own, or
3. What you spend.

Most governments tax all three, though some only two of 'em.

Depending on one's particular situation, any given jurisdiction's "mix" of taxes may be more or less than some other location; and completely different for someone else.

IMHO, some folks "chase" the lowest tax, and I understand that. Other's live where they want and pay the piper.

All that said, if one is traveling, then shifting transactions from one jurisdiction to another can reduce one's tax burden with a little planning. For instance, when we have occasion to be in South Carolina, we ALWAYS arrive with empty tanks and top off the tanks just prior to leaving SC as "motion lotion" there is so much less expensive than any neighboring state.

I bought a Canon zoom in New Hampshire at Best Buy and saved nearly $300.00 if I compared the price plus tax of my local photo store. Best Buy in Canada also respects the guarantees of items bought in BB in the States.

Not exactly, you have to be within the regulations in effect at the, time you cross. Currently you are permitted to cross $800 of goods each after being in the US 48 hours; the value over $800 may be subject to duties and/or taxes. There are specific limits for items such as tobacco and alcohol. Some food products like meats may be limited to a total of 50-lbs for personal use only.

Rules change, interpretation of the border agents and a number of other things may influence what and how much you can cross.

Don't forget local taxes too. You may get quoted a particular tax rate for a state, then find that the sales taxes are actually several % points higher in the locality where you are. Also, be aware that some states exempt food & medicines from tax, while others do not.

But to register a motorhome in TN is only 24 dollars a year.

Ahh yes and that was the same reason I had to write of Georgia!!!
I have 2 cars and 1 MH. Registration in the lovely state of GA is based on the 'value' of your vehicles. I just couldn't fathom peeling off thousands of dollars every year to put plates on them.

It is a fact though. Low state taxes and they have to get it somewhere else. High state taxes and another item will be much lower.
NO state is a win win situation for the consumer. Florida comes close not having to pay taxes on retirement income. :W
