Good advise! And you may see some of those blue "D" signs on California interstates signaling to you that a station may have diesel, but that is not a common thing in all states. Plus when traveling in California be prepared to pay much more for B-20 diesel instead of the good stuff.
I use the apps mentioned, Gas Buddy, Pilot, Trucker's Path, Shell Motorist, and Love's. When towing I stick to Pilot and Flying J, when not towing I stick to whoever has best price as long as they are pumping a lot of diesel.
