Suggested routing AROUND Huston TX

Last month we came thru Huston TX and it took us 3 + hours, and this wasn't during morning rush hour or late afternoon. Suggestions on another route even if it's longer, it may just be faster. All suggestions are very much appreciated. Heading from the East to the West on I-10.

  • Going through Brennan? Might as well treat yourself to a stop at the Blue Bell plant.
Going near Austin? Rudy's has the "worst BBQ in Texas". WELL worth the stop.
  • The following route was suggested to me by sdianel:
TX-105 from Beaumont over to Brenham, turn left on S Blue Bell Rd, which becomes Gun & Rod Rd. Right on US290. Right to ramp to US290W, then slight left onto TX-237 to US-77-S to rejoin I-10. Just reverse it going east. More miles but less stress!
  • #1 If I were going from Beaumont to Fredericksburg I would stay on I-10 to exit 632 and follow 183 to Luling, TX where I would then take TX 80 to San Marcos, then FM 12 to FM 32 to Blanco, TX where I would take FM 1623 (through Luckenbach) on to US 290 and into Fredericksburg. Why? to avoid Austin. I'd much rather drive through Houston than thorough Austin.

#2 If I did wish to avoid Houston (and surrounding metrapolitan area) I would take TX 105 at Beaumont and follow 105 all the way to Brenham, where I would pickup US 290. US 290 through Austin would go all the way to Fredericksburg. To avoid Austin, take TX 21 at Bastrop and pick up the route above at San Marcos.

    Just some more possibilities.
  • We just drive straight thru. We have been lucky and never had any real delays.
  • We get off I-10 @ Winnie on 124 and take it to Crystal beach, then use port Bolivar ferry (ferry is free, large and can handle semis) towards Galveston on 45, then exit onto FM 2004, then to 288, then to TX-35. Great route, good roads, plenty of gas and food stops.
  • Thank you. I've looked at the 105 and it looks good. Our final destination is Frederickburg, TX. Take the 105 out of Beaumont to Brenham. Hop on the 290 over to Bastrop. Take the 71 to the 290 right on in. Sound good to you?
  • We avoid I-10 and use US 84, maybe a bit to far north for you. You could also pick up SR 105 out of Beaumont, again it swings you north of the houston area.
