Just dreaming and planning a florida keys trip. I just read that US 1 in the keys does not accept cash for tolls and only uses Sunpass? So to go to the keys, I have to go to the trouble of getting a sunpass??...

Sunpass is now sold visitors center and rest areas on the turnpike. You can also have them bill you. They read your license plate and send you a bill. The cost for the toll is more and they add a service charge (not sure what that amounts to and the cost per toll is about 30 cents more for each toll).

Sunpass rates are less than cash (where cash is accepted) or toll-by-plate rates.Get the little sticker one to put on the inside of your windshield ($4.99) and I believe you get that cost in credits to your account. I did when I got mine, but that was years ago. Link it up to your credit card online and no worries.

US 1 that runs through the Keys is not a toll road. You can plan your route not using any toll roads if you want. I95 down through Fl to just north of Miami, thenconnect to the Palmatto Exway (hwy 826). The palmatto connects with US1 and then down into the keys. Alot of traffic. If you swing over to the toll road, the southern part will bill by plate as you go through. It's a little more pricy but you won't have to get a sunpass, if that's what you want to do.

Thanks for the reminder. We're headed to Orlando this summer and Key West this Christmas. Just signed up for the $5 mini pass sticker for the windshield.

As has been pointed out earlier, the tolls are a little less expensive if you have a SunPass. On other parts of the turnpike there are exits that you can not use unless you have a SunPass. There are no toll booths and the fines are quite steep if you use those exits without a SunPass.There are no tolls on US1 in the keys.
