Tacoma to Monterey CA

In late October we will be going from Tacoma, WA to Monterey, CA. We have two weeks and would prefer to take the 101, my question is that time of year will we fine campgrounds open and anything else we should be aware of? We will be traveling in a 36-foot 5th wheel.

Thanks
  • The state parks are all open along the Oregon coast as is Clam Beach, Jedediah Smith in Northern California. You should be fine. I don't know below that as we are cutting over on Hwy 20 to Sacramento
  • When we travel south from Pacific Beach State Park WA ,highly recommend this park, our first stop is either Sea Perch RV Resort in Yachats or Beachside State Park. The second stop is either Oceanside RV Resort in Coos Bay or Harris Beach State Park. The third stop is the Willits KOA hopefully getting a pull through with its own hot tub, The fourth stop is in the Monterey area.
  • Since you are traveling in late October you should know Beachside closes 10/31. Harris Beach is closed Oct 1 till May for work.
  • You won't have any problems finding a CG. If you cut over on 20 then you have Sac and Stockton rush hour to consider, then cross back on 152 to 101 to 68 to Monterey. If you decide to stay on 101 then say so and I'll post some info on the GG bridge and SF transit. You could then take 280/85 to 101 or the more scenic 1.

    Updated typo.
  • Thanks for all the info, we have about two weeks to make this trip so will do some exploring along the way.
  • Just my $0.02....

I made that trip driving a pickup back in the early 90's. I don't expect that the roads have changed much since then.

I would suggest looking at driving I-5 a big chunk of the way then cutting over to the coast.

The "driver work load" is quite high through some stretches. Enough for me that I will drive I-5 (yuk) instead.

I guess the exception would be if you are good with short distance days and enjoying the local flavor.

    Have fun & be safe.
