taking a dog to Alaska

Other than getting the proper paperwork to take her through Canada, it shouldn't be any different that than taking her anyplace else in a TC. I've been here for over 50 yrs, had six dogs and some of them went in our TC. The only thing that can go wrong is if she's dumb enough to go after a porcupine or moose. Mine were trained to leave them alone.

On the ferry she'll have to stay down below in the TC between ports, but lots of people do that.

Get a shot record from your vet. Rabies and maybe distemper have to be current. However we crossed twice this summer with two dogs. I handed the shot record to the Canadian border guy and he acted like "what's this for?" And the second time I didn't give the different guy the shot record and he did not ask for it. But better have it just in case.

You'll want to leash her for trails unless she is very much compliant to voice commands. Lot's of hazards for little dogs. And realize that Alaska and BC have far more raptors than you are probably accustomed to. We take two 15 pound dogs with no troubles. Thin coated dogs, or dogs like one of ours who has almost no hair on her underside can be miserable from mosquitoes. Advantix flea treatment will repel mosquitoes or/and they make dog t-shirts with built in repellent.

Denali rules. Pets on a leash no longer than 6 feet are allowed on the Park Road, in parking lots, or on campground roads. In general, pets are not permitted on park trails or off-trail in the wilderness; the exception is the Roadside Trail, where pets may be walked on leash

Most towns have leash laws, which are pretty much ignored. Lots of dogs in Alaska. in addition to proper vet records, my sister had to dump some dog food last year because it was not in the original bag, maybe check the rules on that.

On the ferry you dog would need to stay below in the RV. There are specific short times when you can go to the RV to let it out for a short time.

If you'd encounter a moose or bear on the trail, it's barking might agitate it....or it might scare it away. :)

We travelled with a 6 pound cat in the past, without issue. And always travel with our dogs. Dogs are a way of life here, so usually no campground issues in Yukon or Alaska.

Always keep your dog leashed though. It won't be familiar with the local hazards so best to keep it connected to you when you're out and about. For instance, there are porcupines in Yukon.

Some dogs don't do well with bears; some bring the bear back to the humans - not a good thing! :D

The coyotes and wolves tend to not bother dogs when a human is around.

Some locals let their dogs runs loose, and not all those loose dogs are friendly with other dogs, so keep your dog close. Our 45lb dog's head fit quite nicely inside a huge dog's mouth when we were hiking one time. The other dog's humans weren't in sight as it had run ahead to greet our dogs, I guess. It didn't react to my kicking it either, it was huge! Likely 150 lbs or more, it seemed twice the size of our 90 lb dog. It finally let go when I booted it in the butt. My dog had numerous bleeding holes in his head & ears after that and the other dog's humans quickly disappeared with their dog after they arrived on site and realized what had happened. My dog recovered well enough.

I like dogs and always had them until recently. I also hike a lot. Whenever I run into someone on the trail who has a dog with them, on a leash or not, I try to get as far away from them as possible. Not that I don't like dogs or people who think the rules don't apply to them, but you don't know how your dog will react to a wild animal on the trail or how that wild animal will react to your dog. And unless you know for a fact that you can run faster than your dog you just might be that animal's next meal. Why take the chance?
