We are considering an RV trip to Alaska. Can you folks share your experiences relative to the road conditions and potential damage to your rig? We would be pulling a 40 foot fifth wheel. We are really interested in any info you could provide. Thank you.
We have pulled RVs north every year since 2007. The roads are fine, no damage of consequence to the RV. The current RV is a 40' 5th, since 2012. Choose your route. Ours is to cross at Sumas, hit the Trans Canada to Hope, up and over the Cascades to Kamloops, north to 16 and east to Jasper, north to Grand Prairie. then on to Dawson Creek. The road conditions are usually fine until one passes Whitehorse. The worst section is Destruction bay to Tok. There has been considerable reconstruction in that area the past few years, so it is improving.
Roads in Alaska can be a bit of a problem, but are usually marked for bumps and heaves. Speeds will be lower due to road conditions. Plan to average 45 or less, including stops.
