Roads up are generally as are discribed, I drive to Alaska on the Alcan, we are coming up thru Montana May 1 this yr. back down to Hyder on the Cassiar, (a much more scenic drive) in July for some bear photography my wife is a bear nut.. Take your time, make traveling thru Canada part of the trip (we are planning at least 10 days to Tok) there is lots to see and do if you don't rush as most people do.
The Ferry is expensive and you pay by the ft. It would be better to take the Ferry or a cruise to see the passageway.
