Taking goods and groceries into Canada

Sorry if this is a stupid question - and I know there is a sticky post which points to an outside link - but the link itself is a little bit confusing.

Should I just declare everything I have in my fridge, and all cookies, pieces of bread, nesquik, and so on? Anyone that has done that, how did it go?

In this link, for instance, it says:

One one hand it says
no goods containing meat
but it also says
Meat and poultry products - up to 20 kilograms per person

Can I take my 2lbs steak from CostCo?

How about everything else? We have a grill, a TV, lots of clothes, a coffee maker, etc.?

Thanks!

  • what enblethen said, no fresh fruits or chicken...
    and no firearms...
  • Do not hand them a list of anything. They may or may not ask you questions. If they ask you questions, answer the question, nothing else. It isn't hard. We came into the US a little over a week ago. We didn't bring any eggs but we were asked about any chicken and my DW answered yes and after a few moments of contemplation we were allowed to leave with a warning about bringing chicken and any derivatives of into the US. If they decide they want to investigate further, they will. Take any glasses you may be wearing off, after shutting your TV off, hand them your passport if that's what is required and wait to see what they ask you.

    Nobody's stopping you.

What difference does it make going through customs with a travel trailer or a cooler in the back seat? I guess you better chastise the post above this one for posting a link to the customs site.
  • Thanks Shum. Do you just handle them a list of your stuff? In fact, I just realized I'll have a bunch of tools and other things to help fix anything on the go.

I guess we don't need this forum then :)

If you google that they usually assume you're not taking your refrigerator, your bedroom and your bathroom with you. There is very little on the web regarding travel trailers. This site is one of the best resources for that.

  • I've had zero issues going back and forth over the years. Just check Canada Border Services for updated list of products not welcome.

Remember to check U.S Border Services when coming back home with Canadian goods as well.
