Tampa FL to Cherokee NC - Route Question

Hey Folk; plan on leaving Tuesday for Cherokee, NC. Initially I planes route was North through Atlanta then NW to Cherokee (in short).

Was just reviewing the trip and I wonder if running Tampa to Jacksonville and run the East Coast to Savannah continue the coast to Charleston, SC then start heading NW thru Columbia, SC and then on to Cherokee, NC ??

Only adds 3HRS to the trip and seems to be a nice scenic route.

Has anybody travelled this route or something similar?
Will this route drag along the coast close enough to see the Atlantic?

Any comments would be great

thanks

  • I'm in and out of Florida to N.C. year round on business. If time is an issue, from Tampa, I'd take I-75 north to Macon, Ga and I-16 east towards Savannah. Exit 1A onto US 129 N and follow to US 441 North. Hang a left heading north and follow to Cherokee. It's a nice break from Interstate traffic and by-passes Atlanta. I see no advantage in taking the I-95/I-26 route. Typical Interstate scenery other than inland coastal marshes around the Brunswick area. Travel safe.
  • We take US301 North up to I-10 to I-95. We stop in Brunswick GA at the Coastal Georgia RV Resort, exit 29 off I-95. Watch out for speed traps in Lawtey.
If you have time and want to visit Winston Salem area, we found Tanglewood Forsyth County Park in Clemmons NC. Great little park.
In Asheville, Mama Gertie's is beautiful.
    Enjoy!

We always take I26 out of Charleston to Ashville then straight run to Cherokee from there.

If you want to see some Pisgah mountain roads you can get off at Hendersonville and head for their mountains which will get you to Ashville as well...

I95 and US17 really don't get close enough to see much of the Alantic. You will have to pull into some private place to see anything. US17 will give some view of it but I95 is too far west to see anything...

  • Nice route. Just take I 40 West out of Ashville NC and then take the Great Smoky Mtn. Parkway! Easy Drive
