Texas Oil Field Issues

As you may know Texas is experiencing an oil boom and this is showing up in the roads, traffic, campgrounds and such, especially in West Texas.

Recently we traveled from the San Antonio area to Albuquerque, NM and choose to travel on Hwy 83 & Hwy 87 to get from the Texas Hill Country to New Mexico.

The roads were clogged with oil field traffic and white oil company vehicles of all strips racing around the area. You could see lots of well activity and tankers servicing the wells. As you can imagine, this makes it difficult to get through the area.

But what really caused the most problems was when it rained and all that oil debris got on the trailer. We were shocked to find our nice clean white trailer covered in black filth. It took three hard washings to get the entire trailer clean again.

If you're traveling in West Texas watch out for any roads used by oil field traffic. Also we found the majority of campgrounds full with oil field workampers, too, making it difficult to find space. We even checked for a room at a cheap hotel in Big Springs and it was over $200 a night because they were able to get that much from the oil company folks.

Here's a couple of photos of my trailer after we got home. One photo shows the trailer half washed and half covered in dirt and oil so you get an idea of the magnitude of the problem.
