I have read that things are much cheaper, and of course, the winter weather should be great, but what else?
I have a hard time understanding why folks from the USA would put up with what seems to be some hassle from police, or crime.
Having never been there, I must be missing something. Care to share?
Sharing might not help, in this case. I could say that your perception is wrong on both points - or that it is right.
Things are not "much" cheaper - some things are much cheaper, some slightly cheaper, and some cost more. Depends what things, and where. Like Old Bisquit said, it's not the same as 50 years ago - the feeling that you're being taken advantage of is quite clear at times. You can get used to it, or you might have tons of money or managing your finances so poorly that don't notice these things.
Winter is warmer - of course, at these latitudes. It can also get windy and with wide range of temperatures when it's below freezing in the night and then becomes hot as soon sun rises. This isn't Bahamas.
Crime... Yes, there is crime. More than in the US or less - I don't know. Depends on what crime, where, and what kind of life you are living.
Police is not the same as in the US, more corrupt, less efficient, but there are different levels in their police - there is local police, traffic cops, federal forces etc, they are not all the same. It's better not to rely on them and to stay away from any of them. Which is probably true with any police in any country - let's say in Mexico you should stay farther from them.
Beaches are... Let's say they are plentiful. Any other statement would depend on POV. Less development, more garbage.
People... This is difficult to explain to somebody who didn't travel
outside US/Canada. Let's say they are different. Due to language barrier - that I assume you have, otherwise you wouldn't ask - you will not get a clear picture on this subject.
Can't say about food - I am using the kitchen in my rig, but since there is no such thing as American or Canadian cuisine, most any country will have local cuisine better.
