Key word here is APPROVED PURPOSE.
The Canadian embassy has repeatedly stated that self defense and hunting is NOT likely an acceptable reason for the transport authorization. And you have to obtain the approved ATT BEFORE attempting to cross. So, to say all you have to do is fill out the form and drive up to the border crossing is a tad misleading.

That's not quite correct Mike.
Hunting is absolutely an acceptable reason for importing a firearm, HOWEVER, the firearm you are importing must be suitable for the task, you must be an accredited hunter, you must be traveling only to a hunting area during hunting season.
I have many American friends who come to Canada to hunt, rarely do I hear anything but that they breezed through the border.
I also have a few friends who are competitive shooters who come up for matches here, some bring their own pistol, some borrow one from a Canadian friend here.
Again, as long as all their paperwork, not just the above form, is complete and in order.
