Wait a moment. On further thought I want to amend what I just said. I fully agree that the numbers you refer to are daunting...especially to one who has not experienced real daily life in Mexico. And I also think that people who say "I would never go to Mexico" just might be here for a reason. I think there is likely some level of interest or at least curiosity that brings you here and if so, that is good. So please excuse my intemperate response. I do hope you allow yourself to experience what so many others have found to wonderful.....the real Mexico that does not show up in the media.
