To Liberty Harbor Marina from the North

Trailer Life Directory has us traveling south on SHy 9 to the Holland tunnel, crossing over to the NJ side and then to Liberty Harbor.
It appears there are restrictions on taking a MH with toad through the tunnel. Height 12'6", width 8'. "No trailers or towed vehicles."

Lincoln tunnel: 13', 8'6"

G.W Bridge: 14', 8'6"

I am at 12'8" height, 8'6" wide.

What are my best options to avoid leaving part of my motorhome or my wife in New York?
Perhaps crossing the river via the G.W. Bridge and continuing south from there to the park?

Thanks for your support.

  • CHANGE OF PLANS.

We will not be staying at Liberty Harbor after all. Our daughter and her husband had planned to fly up and join us, but they now cannot do that.

So our destination now in NY is Green Lakes State Park east of Syracuse, NY. I will be attending a reunion at Syracuse University, then we will be meandering on back home.

Thanks for all the replies and information.

  • My last stop prior to Liberty Harbor will be in Eastford, Conn. From there, I will head west to I-84, then W/SW on I-84 to I-684 to I-287. West on I-287 across the Tappan Zee to the Garden State Parkway connector, south on the connector to the Garden State Parkway. Garden State Parkway south to its intersection with I-78 near Irvington, east on I-78 to Grand Street, east on Grand to Marin Street and Liberty Harbor.

    Does that sound about right?

I have driven the motorhome through major metropolises such as Boston, Cleveland, Chicago, New Orleans, Houston, Dallas/Ft. Worth, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, St. Louis and Verden, Oklahoma with no problems; however, the last time I drove in NYC was in 1970, and that was in an MGB sportscar...

    Thanks for all the tips.
  • I live here in NJ, not too far from Liberty Harbor. I would suggest you take the Tappan Zee Bridge and then pick up the Garden State Parkway. Yes, you can take the rv on the Garden State but NOT on the Palisades Parkway. Follow the Garden State South to I-78. Take I-78 toward the Holland Tunnel. That will bring you into Jersey City, fairly close to Liberty Harbor.

Don't consider either the Holland or Lincoln tunnels or any 'parkway' in CT or NY. You will not like the low bridges.

    Enjoy
  • Also, while I am not sure where you are stopping in the states you mentioned, if you get to I-84 you might want to continue west and pick up the NY Thruway at Newburg NY ( on the east side of the Hudson river) you can head south and pick up the Jersey Turnpike or head down 287 south to I80 and then 280 through New Jersey and on to your destination.

Someone local can give specific advice on the last part.

Search Liberty Park routes here good info on "last mile" part.
  • I don't know what your other plans are or how you are navigating, but if I were in your situation, I would look for routes west across new England and cross the Hudson near Albany. Then you could take Rt9 south from there. No tolls and much more scenic. If you are not accustom to driving and towing through the megopolis, I suggest you avoid it.

  • Still trying to figure out my route. I'll cross over via the Tappan Zee, then turn south on US Hwy 9 to Palisades Parkway and continue south to Liberty Harbor. Am I going to run into any problems on this route?

    THanks.

  • Should have been more specific. Tappan Zee looks good. We are on PEI, will be heading to Liberty Harbor through Maine,Mass, Conn, etc. on I-84. I can cross over anywhere - looks like Tappan Zee is my best bet, then meander south from there.

  • Take the Tappan Zee Bridge. Not sure where from the north you are heading from.
  • Well GM,

Without a hint of where you choose to start from beyond "North", it is hard to help.

Were I in your position, I would cross the Hudson as far north as possible and stay off of Manhattan. Even if you have to go as far north as Tappan Zee and come south on the Palisades.

Yes, it is close to the Holland Tunnel, but the no trailers thing makes that a self-answering question. I don't like the NYC end of the Lincoln Tunnel. (They were working on it, it may be better.) That kind of leaves old GW Bridge or Tappan Zee.

    Good Luck
