Toll thru Chicago on I80

I only travel the Illinois Tollway once a year. I drive thru them then when I get home I go to the site below and pay the tolls. There are signs along the tollway instructing you to do this if you miss the toll both.

We understand that mistakes happen. At times, customers who pay cash may find themselves in an unattended toll plaza lane or in an I-PASS Only lane. If this happens, continue driving forward. Do not back up at any time--it is unsafe. Make note of your location by identifying the toll plaza name or number or the nearest milepost. You will be required to identify the unpaid toll location when submitting your payment. Be sure to go online or pay by mail within the 7-day grace period.

Payments can be made online or by mail, though online payment is recommended because it provides a record of transmission within the 7-day grace period.

If you experience problems in processing an online payment, you also have the option of mailing your payment for the unpaid toll

Another vote for the I-Pass, I used it thru Illinois to New York & well worth the money.

There are varying conditions on buying the EZPass depending on which state you buy it in. I ordered mine from Delaware as there were no monthly/annual fees like some other states. As I recall, it was $25 for the transponder and a $25 or $50? deposit towards user fees. when my balance drops below some amount they tack on another $25 on your credit card to keep your balance up. and be careful of the fine print. some states don't charge a monthly maintenance fee but only if you are using it sufficiently.

Our extremely limited experience with toll roads was once (I don't recall where) we would be stopping every few miles to pay.... irritating.... I gather that's not the case here... thanks

As mentioned above I think we'll invest in the EZ-Pass...

Invest in the EZPass or an IPass. It is soooooo worth not having to slow down.

I assume you meant East out of Chicago. but this route might save tolls but you still deal with the traffic on 80 on the south side of chicago.

I have a much different view than those above. Take the I80/I94 west out of Chicago to Indiana 49. This is only 1 exit East. Go South on 49 to Rt. 30. You will have a 4 lane, No toll route all the way into Eastern Ohio. There are routes East after this point that you need to reseach.

The only area that is slow will be the 5 miles at Warsaw, Indiana. This is not bad driving. The route around Ft. Wayne is higher traffic, but watch the time of day to avoid the rush.

I have driven this route many times in truck, rv, and passenger car. You will save around $80 and have excellent roads. Look at the map, research this route on this site for further comments.

One toll booth, our last toll was $1.70 MH towing and using IPASS.

That toll booth can have a long backup depending on time of day and day of week and the IPASS lanes are always faster as long as there are no accidents causing traffic issues. They rebuilt that whole section of I80 from west of the toll booth through Indiana to the toll road entrance a few years ago. Traffic can be heavy at times but barring an accident, traffic always flows at a reasonable rate.

The IPASS through IL can be used anywhere EZ Pass is used and really saves time on the IL tollway system.
