Tolls NY Metro Insane

CKNSLS, I'm sure it was. That must have been a while ago, cause the cash toll for that rig is $53.00 now. with 2 more incrases scheduled for the next 2 years, that rig will cost you $68.00 by dec. 2015.

A while back I compared past and current tolls on one of the Maryland bridges. While the current tolls are much higher, they are actually lower relative the cost of gas.

If this history is anything to go by, the Triborough tolls never were low.

I paid 37.00 dollars to cross a bridge in New York with 4 axles. That's a half-ton truck and a 28 foot Ultra Light TT. I think it might have been the George Washington Bridge but can't exactly remember which bridge....just the $37.00/for 4 axles....

This thread reminded me of the first time I drove a motor home from Fl. to Boston. It was back in 1995. I had just gone over a bridge going into N.Y. state and hadn't noticed what the toll was. I got to the toll booth and the attendant told me it was $5 (maybe $3.50 it was a long time ago). I just blurted out are you shi**ing me ? He got a chuckle and told me there was no charge going in the opposite direction. Whatever it was, I thought it was exorbitant for way back then. I can't believe what you folks are paying for tolls up there now. :E

I certainly agree the tolls in the Northeast are insane. I remember the Cheasapeake Bay Bridge on Rt. 50 near Annapolis would charge $2.50 for a vehicle and an additional $2.50 per axle for a trailer. So if your travel trailer had 2 axles you paid more for the trailer than you did for the tow vehicle. The Delaware Memorial Bridge in South Jersey is a straight per axle rate. I think the last time I crossed with the MH and toad I paid $20. I don't know what the NJ Turnpike charges. I try to avoid that highway. I live in Northwest Jersey so when I travel south I cross at the I-95 bridge near Trenton then drive through Philly. That bridge, at least for now, is free.

Slay I did call the Delaware bridge authority and they told me the toll was correct 4axles x 4 and there are weight and height sensors built into the roadway. I think the difference is you have a mh tag, I cant get an rv tag for my truck. Don't ever come across the Hudson your mh tag is useless, ur taxed by axles and tires.

Your problem may be EZPass. I often travel in my MH towing a car from New Jersey to Pennsylvania via I-78. If I use EZPass when crossing the Delaware River I am charged $13 (4 axle commercial rate). If I pay cash it costs $6.50 ($5.50 for the MH and $1 for the car). The same is true when you cross the Delaware River on I-80 at the Delaware Water Gap. The Delaware Memorial Bridge is south Jersey is different since it is run by a different agency.

My suggestion, call the agency to find out the proper toll, or pay cash next time and compare that to what you were charged on EZPass. You might find cash is cheaper.

No spa you're not supporting me. I'm in the same boat as you, I don't use the mta, yet when I registered my trailer in the fall and asked the clerk for a breakdown, and she told me there was a 20 something dollar mta fee, I told her I admired the fact that she could say that without laughing. The toll increases often support education, and subsidize mass transit, and judjing from the condition of the bridges, I know, it's mind boggling.

Well as long as the politicians can use your money to keep bus fares, subway fares and train fares down that is what you will get. How do you think we feel here in the Hudson valley being taxed by the MTA to support you down there??? We get the shaft by metro NY all day long.

Someone is complaining about the same issue I have been annoyed by for many years.

In our case, we have an antique coach that happens to have a rear axle (One Axle by SAE definition) but it is tandem (one in front of the other) instead of dual (tires side by side). So, many places charge us with the 9500# 23' coach the same fare as full sized Greyhound. If they could go so far as to actually count tires, that might be nice (we only have six), or actually charge by weight (we would do well on that too), then I might not feel so cheated. But as a friend of my daughter's said (with a straight face),"You have a motorhome, you must be rich enough that you can afford any tolls they think can think are appropriate."

This is why we have maps and toll charts. We can afford to drive quite a long ways to avoid an exorbitant toll. We get to see a lot of nice country that way.
