Trailer Tires, San Carlos?

We are trying to find more trailer tires for our tent trailer. Should have bought more back in the states.
Does anyone know where we might find 5.30 x 12 trailer tires near San Carlos / Guaymas? Or any place in the states that will ship them here?
We are still mobile but used our last spare and want to buy more spares before moving along without a spare.
Thanks

  • Lol! That is too easy :)
I should have thought to have him call in the first place.

Thanks! Will do that right now.
Did find a place in the states that will ship them, though they will be expensive that way.

    Thanks,

  • Ask Joe at Totonaka Rv Park to call a Tire Dealer for You. The size that You need may be a special order in Mexico!
  • A min of 10% of the trailer weight is suppose to be on the tongue transferred to the tow vehicle. Then divide the remaining weight by two for the wheels so 1400-140=1260/2=630lbs/tire&wheel. A car tire of 805 has room for more weight. PLUS a car tire is better built than a trailer tire any day of the week. Trailer tires IMHO are JUNK! Take a look at the speed rating, rarely is a trailer tire rated for more than 65mpg where as a car tire is generally around 100mph or more. Good luck.

  • Thanks QTLA and Rocmoc - good suggestions. I have considered that. I looked at the weight rating of 12" car tires and the best I can find is 805lbs max load. The tent trailer dry is about 1200lbs plus about 200 lbs of extras. I don't think the car tires would hold up even if I can find them, but maybe there are some more heavy duty 12" car tires?
My other thought is to swap them out for 13" wheels and tires if I can find a close profile on the tire height. A 24" outside diameter tire will clear the edge of the fender well by only about 1/4". The trailer tires are 23" OD. The trailer hubs take a 4 x 4 bolt pattern wheel so I would think I could find them. The fender wells are basically inside of the body of the trailer rather than external fenders. The tire clearance is actually figured from the center of the hub to the closest part of the main frame so that will be a bit difficult to adjust :)
As you say Rocmoc - if we can't figure out something, the local people down here can make it work. I have even considered swapping out the torsion axle for a regular leaf spring axle for more tire clearance.
  • Agree with qtla, try to find 12" car tire. Take the diameter of the trailer tire and just get close. Load rating will not be a problem. If you can't find something small enough you may have to consider removing the trailer fenders temporally. You may even find a car rim with the correct lug pattern if you bend a rim. The trailer rim is not as strong as car rims and may bend on the trip.

Don't give up, you can find a solution in Mexico, the locals are very good at finding a fix.

Tent trailers are pretty light. You might consider regular tires, it would be easier and much cheaper. There are lots of threads going on no here on Rv.Net about using LT tires. Worth considering in terms of hassles. Good luck.
