I lived in Newfoundland for 24.5 years and did Labrador to Baie Comeau on 2006. Pic link is in sigunature.
I think that I found the roads better than is described. Grading was done quite regularly then.
Campgrounds were few, but boondocking opportunities could be found.
I drove 40 km as a rule, though the speed limit was 70. This was just plain more practical.
