Travel Ban in Pennsylvania due to winter storm

TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS: Beginning at midnight on Tuesday night, PennDOT will impose a ban on empty straight trucks, large combination vehicles (tandem trailers and double trailers), tractors hauling empty trailers, trailers pulled by passenger vehicles, motorcycles and recreational vehicles, or RVs, on:

• I-78 from the junction with I-81 to the New Jersey state line.
• I-80 from the junction with I-81 to the New Jersey state line.
• I-81 from the Maryland state line to the New York state line.
• I-84 from the junction with I-81 to the New York state line.
• I-380 from the junction with I-80 to the junction with I-81.

Then, starting at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, all commercial vehicles will be banned on I-380 and I-84 within Pennsylvania.
  • Well, the huge storm is winding down...we got about an inch at my house :)

Last night, the dire predictions said I was in the 8-12 inch area...I consider a foot to be a nuisance snow...hardly worthy of a state of emergency...

In all fairness, they are getting more farther east but nowhere near what was forecast...

It started cranking UP about 11:00AM here.. we were just in Thunder snow, and now are at about 6"-7" since 11:00.. It is supposed to stay like this till around 6pm-7pm or there abouts. Ranging from 1"-3" per hour.

PennDOT doesn't want to run enough PLOWS, so they call an audible and close the roads instead.

PennDOT didn't send heavy equipment to clear an accident on I80 this past week, resulting in motorists stranded for 24hrs or more.

PennDOT has failed to cut crossovers into limited access highways for emergencies and traffic rerouting.

I agree we have a problem here. Anyone want to guess the common theme? (Hint: it isn't snow)

So prepare like you're heading into the outback and have 3 days of supplies and food and a pocket full of gas money to pay the high fuel tax that was siphoned off for pensions instead of roads and bridges.

Many of us are NOT HAPPY with the lack of competency in our beloved state at the moment. Be safe!

My wife and I were just discussing this as we were 4 wheelin' in the Winnie on 78E this past Sunday...ridiculous gas tax and horrible trash lined roads. I almost thought we were in RI for a minute
  • In CA we just throw up the Chains Required signs. Keeps most off the road and slows everyone down to about 20 mph.
  • The number of plows have been cut back, so there is often too much time between passes of a plow as it makes its rounds.

When that happens, all it takes is that first vehicle to get stuck or in an accident and then it dominoes and the plows can't get there.

I know some plow drivers. THEY aren't slacking. Just not enough of them when needed.

And our "governor" is quick to declare a "State of Emergency" for opiods (don't get started on abuse of authority), but won't call out construction equipment to clear roads when lives are at risk over 24hrs. The Buck stops with him.

Our state has so much potential and so much to offer- if we could just get the clueless to step down or out of the way and let competent folks take charge.

    It's not political, it's observations. ;)

Stay safe and remember to visit our state parks, they are still quite good ;)
  • We ended up getting 3+ per hour for a while... 17”+ total... this is the only way we could get the windshield clean of snow.. every 15 minutes or so ... took me just shy of 4 hours to go 10 miles... it usually takes me 20 minutes
