Traveling from FL to MA - not on 95

Does anyone have any suggestions of good highways from Florida to MA...we usually take I95 but would like to try another route...we have a 28' Passport Travel Trailer. We plan to drive 5-6 hours a day and enjoy the 'road trip'...trying to escape the Fl August heat!!

Any favorite 'sights'or campgrounds would be great also! Thank you, Penny

  • Why not just stay on 301 to I26? It meets I26 between I95 and Colombia?

Here's one of the ways we go

    From Tampa I 75 N to SH326 to 301 north

    301 to Callahan... Take SH200 to I-95N

    I-95North to I-26West in SC

I-26West to Columbia, SC and I-77North

    I-77N to I-81West

I-81EAST to Scranton Pa and then I-84 East.

    I-84East to I-90East (Mass. Tpke)

    I-90East to I-495North beltline

I-495N to I-95N (all the way to Bangor)
  • There are some decent grades, particularly in the southern part of the Blue Ridge Parkway. They aren't extreme, and the speed limit is not super high (and with curves such that the actual speed stays somewhat reasonable). Many RVs of all sorts of descriptions go over the roads every year.

The tunnels are primarily in the southern part of the Blue Ridge Parkway. There is one tunnel in the northern part of the parkway, and one (Mary's Rock tunnel) on Skyline Drive. See here for the Blue Ridge Parkway tunnel heights; Mary's Rock tunnel has a height limit listed as 12'8". A typical travel trailer should have no problems at all with any of them.
  • Thank you all for your ideas - ...I am going to try maps @yahoo...
but I agree with Big Kahuna...hate I95!! We are headed to Abington MA...
Drew E -- Are the low tunnels on Skyline Drive? We have a TT so I think that would be lower than a RV or fifth wheel...how is the grade on Blue Ridge? and skyline? (I know in TN we had to stay to the right...lots of up and down!!)
  • I sometimes take I81 but if you have time I like US17 from FL to VA then it depends what part of MA 684 to 84 or 81 to 90. What part of MA.
  • I-81 is a good (if obvious) option. I think I have mostly gone via I-75 to Knoxville, though sometimes I-77 and I-26. Both work and miss most of the worst of the cities. (Atlanta on I-75 is an exception, though I've usually not had an unreasonable time going around it.)

If you have plenty of time, the Blue Ridge Parkway to Skyline Drive is wonderful. Don't be too put off by the low tunnels; they are all barrel-shaped, and the heights are measured at the shoulder—the middle is tall enough to easily clear a typical RV if you keep fairly tight to the middle line.
  • We go between Fl and Maine and never get on I95. I hate I 95.
Get over to I81 however you want. We take that to I77 to I26 to US301s to points S. Hardly any longer, way more scenic and you miss DC, JAX etc.
  • Go to www.maps.yahoo.com and put in the start and end addresses. A suggested route will display with the time required to make the trip. You can Click and Drag the route to get away from I-95 as much as you want. The new required time will change for the current route.
