traveling from Sault Ste Marie to Niagara Falls

Hello,

We are traveling from Sault Ste Marie to Niagara Falls and wondering if anyone has made the trip on the canadian roads. Looks like towns are spread apart. Just wonder what type of roads we would be on?

Any info or advice is appreciated.

If you'd like less 4 lane freeway time and more time on 2 lane secondary highways and see some beautiful countryside you could take Highway 6 south from Highway 17 at Espanola and down onto Manitoulin Island. From there you can take the ferry across the mouth of Georgian Bay to Tobermory. From there you can take one of several highways south to Niagara Falls.

Just make sure the ferry is running. It is getting off to a late start this year due to low water levels at the docks. You can check out sailing times, costs, and reservations at www.ontarioferries.com
  • Took that route a few years ago and enjoyed it thuroughly. Take a little time and head further north and enjoy the thousands of tiny lakes and ponds found in the area. Make for some pretty nice camping up there.
  • It's been a few years, but we took that exact route. It is a beautiful drive, low traffic and lots to see. Towns are spaced out a bit, but it's really not that bad. Have fun and enjoy our friends to the north!

  • S.S. Marie to Sudbury is good 2 lane highway with several areas where there is am extra passing lane. Sudbury to Niagara Falls, other than a small stretch not too far south of Sudbury, is pretty much divided highway all the way with a 100 KPH (62 MPH) speed limit.

Not a lot of fuel choices between Sudbury and Parry Sound but there are some stations. What I like to do is fuel up at the Esso in Nairn Centre and then that gets me all the way down to the Barrie area where there is lots of choice. If possible avoid the Shell station in Pointe-Au-Baril, it's one of the most expensive in the province.
