ULSD in Baja

Last Winter when I was in the Baja There was evidence and reports that ULSD was in the rollout stages for Pemex there. Does anyone have an update. I now have a new diesel and would love to return but am awaiting the availability of ULSD.

That is correct, north half only. Check out the diesel info page on our company website at Diesel

You should be OK as long as you follow some simple precautions. If in doubt contact Ted White. His email is on that page. We have taken late model diesels on caravans that are twice as long as that section of Baja without issues when people follow the precautions. If you have a Ford or Chev, consider getting an Edge tuner that can force a regen on the DPF filter. The info is there. When I wrote that page there was not one that was for a Dodge, but Dodges are less susceptible to issues with this.

Thanks for the info. But my truck is a 2016 still under warranty and when I put the question to Dodge their response was that it very well might affect some or all of the Emissions Control system warranty, which is a BIG deal on the Dodge as complicated as that system is, to say nothing of expensive to replace.

Now I have heard anecdotal evidence about the Cummins handling the non ULSD just fine and will re-generate as needed keeping you out of limp mode...but that is OPPOSITE of what the owners manual says.

Any thoughts or direct experience from anyone with a NEW Cummins in the Baja???

  • I live in Baja Sur year round.

By all accounts of travelers reports and information from a Pemex owner in El Rosario, the farthest point south for ULSD is the town of Jesus Maria.
Jesus Maria is north of the State line separating north and south states of Baja.

Any Pemex station in Baja Sur (south of Jesus Maria) will not have ULSD.
  • You have brought up a subject that is sure to start a riot. There is no real answer to your question. Some posters claim that part of Baja uses US ULSD fuel. Could be correct. As for any rollout of ULSD. Nothing has changed since last year.
