Upper Peninsula, Michigan travel in July

Hi everyone,

I'm planning a trip through the UP between July 9 and 23rd out of KY. I'm pretty comfortable with parks and places to stay in both Lower Michigan and Wisconsin, but haven't been to the UP for 25 years and then it wasn't with a RV. I drive a Class A with a toad. Can anyone recommend places to stay and places to stay away from. Also if there are roads I'll need to stay away from, please let me know. Any one interested in joining I plan on being in the SOO around July 12 or 13th. I need to be in Madison, WI on or before July 19.
Thanks, Jim

When you are in Sault Ste Marie, don't forget to visit Mackinaw Island. There are ferries that go to the island all day long. When I was there last, is was cool and breezy. We hiked around and found arch rock. There was a stairway that went down from there to a beach area below. That was on the sheltered side of the island and it was beautiful down there. We sat there for a long time just enjoying the beauty and the sunshine.

If going to the island, Make sure that you get away from the tourist areas to enjoy the beauty of the island itself not the fudge shops:)

  • We spent about 2 weeks in the U.P. last July during the same time period. We really enjoyed Woodland Park in Grand Marais on the shores of Lake Superior. We never made reservations and there were plenty of sites available, although it does get busier on weekends. Check out the Lake Superior Brewing Co. downtown. Take supplies as there is limited grocery available.

Michigamme Shores, about 40 miles west of Marquette has full hook ups and is right on the lake, a very BIG lake.

  • Forgot to mention :
City of Houghton RV Park - another great spot on the water

    Iron Mountain
    Rivers Bend Campground

    Garden Peninsula
    Fayette State Park
    Might have length restrictions?
  • I'm thinking of a similar trip in Sept. Leaving Maine, thru Pa and Ohio to Mich. Turn north and cross the Mac. bridge. Head to Wis and turn south. Grew up in Madison and am a UW grad but haven't been back since the late 80's. Then on to Montana before heading south to Co and NM. Back to Fla on I10. Mich and Wis are the two states I have not RV'd in so I am also interested in these replies.

Aune Osborn Rv Park- it's right on the St. Mary's River just below the Locks

    Michigamme (west of Ishpeming)
Michigamme Shores RV Park- on the shore of Lake Michigamme

    Munising
City park on the shore of Lake Superior- not sure if you can make a reservation

+1 for all three and you can make reservations at all, but you will be lucky to get a space on the water at this late date.
  • Woodland CG at Grand Marais, Ontonagon municipal CG, Porcupine Mtn SP and McLain SP are all on Lake Superior and are nice. Best to get reservations now for McLain if possible.

  • Pictured rocks area and up into the porcupine mountain area is a must.
