US 190 Baton Rouge to Opelousas

Does anyone have recent experience with the route: US 190 between Baton Rouge and Opelousas, LA?

I take this as an alternate to I-10 between Baton Rouge and Layfayette, LA because I head on north on I-49, so it is a short cut for me. But I would like more recent information about the road surface.

Thanks for your help.

  • Watch your speed through the small towns. The speed limits start and end at the signs and they will be happy to take your donation to the city coffers. It's an adequate road most of the way a good for a lot of it. If you go somewhat early, treat yourself to a few boudin balls from Billy's in Krotz Springs. Mmmmmm. Make you wanna slap you mamma cher!
  • From Bayou Courtableau to Port Barre, you may want to ride in the left lane. The right lane is pretty bumpy. But move over if someone wants to pass you, since it's illegal to block traffic in the left lane.
  • Last traveled about 2 months ago. The surface was in fair shape. Port barre to river is rutted. Has much less chance of being closed vs I10.
