US 31 in Indiana north of Indianapolis

What's US-31 like these days between Indianapolis and the MI state line? We traveled it years ago but we weren't towing. We'll be going through on a weekday if that makes any difference. The other option we have is to cut up I-69 to Ft. Wayne. Opinions from those who know these roads are appreciated. Thanks.
  • There's a good bypass around the west side of South Bend. There is active construction south of town, turning it into divide highway, but most that work is off to the west, and shouldn't affect traffic. The Indiana DOT has construction alert website.
  • How is it the rest of the way? Are there lots of intersections or is it country for most of the way?

4 lane all the way with a few lights

Yep. We drove it a few weeks ago. Road is in great condition for Indiana standards (generally poor roads these days). There is construction in Westfield and the road is closed in Carmel. Traffic is going instead on Keystone in Carmel which is an excellent road. There is also a new bypass on 31 around Kokomo.
  • There's also a new bypass around Kokomo that cuts out about 30 minutes of travel time.
  • The bypass in Kokomo is the best thing to happen to US31 north of Indy in years. You can now avoid a bazillion traffic lights and slow traffic.
  • MY DH reminded me that Kokomo was the worst part of traveling US-31 (with or without an RV) and it's great to know that that bottleneck has been rectified. Thanks.
  • Just and update. Thanks to all of your input we decided to take US 31 in Indiana and found it to be a good road. US 31 is closed at I-465 but the detour is well marked and put us on a good road for a few miles before we got back on US-31. With the by-pass around Kokomo the drive was pleasant and we had no problems.
