Hi there!

Well, you will get all kinds of answers. You have to make the choice based on your comfort level. Have driven it many times and would never recommend it for most RV's....simple as that.....teep grades, tight turns, Hogback area has no real shoulders with no guard rails and steep dropoffs.

Mountain Directory West will give the intensity of the grades but does not mention the little to no shoulders, no guard rails, etc.

That being said, make sure to drive it with your toad. Bryce and Capitol Reef are two of our very favorite places and been to both many times.

Remember, you can have control over everything except the guy coming the other way.

Utah Route 12

A couple of pictures of the hogsback section. It's about 1/4 to 1/2 mile long and no one drives fast through there. There are a couple of very short 14% grades on the Bryce side just before the hogsback.

That was so easy to pullup with my old 5th wheel with my Super Supercharged Chev. pickup about 5 years back.

We've driven it often with our 40' MH.

If you normally can drive on a highway without running into guard rails or off the pavement then you'll be just fine.

You've driven to Alaska :) without issues and some of those roads are the same.

From Escalante to Torrey you'll have a long uphill but it has shoulders and guardrails and by that time you're in the pine forest. It's a beautiful drive.

About 10 miles before Torrey is a national forest campground, Singletree, which is very suitable for a 40' MH. We like it because it's cooler temps than Torrey. There are plenty of RV parks in Torrey.

Plan a night or two in Escalante midway so you can take your towed vehicle for some exploring in either direction. Calf Creek is a pretty little hike to a beautiful waterfall.

Drove it this spring. Only issue was the weather. Rain to sleet with hail then snow and ice. If that happens, pull over and wait. In an hour, it will all change. It's a great drive.

We are all different - so you will need to stay in your comfort Zone - I will go out of my way to drive this road in the Coach! - Beautiful and IMHO Easy.

In Utah Rt 12 and Rt 128 are my two go to roads - just love them and all it takes to get to them, the reason we RV is to have the chance to be on these roads.

I might add that while in the area see if you can do some of the drives ans Hikes around Lake Powell. Rt 85 and a few side roads will also, IMHO, take your breath away - just some beautiful country in the spring.
