Van Burns near Palenque

Update on our issue with the burned van. Finally found a phone number for the Federal Police in Palenque and spoke with the Inspector who walked us through the procedure and took us to the Judge who provided us with 60 pages of documentation about the burned van. I am today emailing Senior Cota all the information Mexico City wants and he says he will fix it for us. Who knows maybe there is still hope. Thanks again for all the people who provided us with information. Wish we could have done this while still in Mexico, but when the van burned, we lost phones and computer . All we got out with was the clothes on our backs and our dog and cat. We only had 2 or 3 minutes to get out. Thankfully, I had a belly pack with important documents in it.

Yes, it's legal, as long as both of you show on the vehicle registration.

Silver Strand Beach. Thank you for your reply. We do not travel with a carrier. It freaks our cat out, but we have a very light wieght 10 ft string from walmart. It is wire covered with plastic and when we travel she is on it attached to the handgrip by the door. She doesn't mind it at all and can get to her box (important) and lay in the window (important). Neither our cat or dog will eat or drink unless we come to a complete stop. Isn't crazy.

BTW, I don;t think we will ever straighten this out. Just going to put vehicle in my name and travel on. He will still have to drive even if it is in my name. I don;t know if this is legal or not.

I spoke with someone in Palenque yesterday and was told that all the information is included in the report we have. I don't really know this to be true because it takes me forever to translate and it is 60 pages long. He told me to send the picture of the burning van and send all back to Mexico City again. He said to contact the embassy if further problems which I have already tried to do but get nothing but presss 1 or 2 or 3 etc and never get a REAL person. I think we are screwed!!

Did it acutally work? We have renewed our passports, and currently the moho TIP is in my name, not his, because as much as we tried, as many times, with all the steps, we were unable to cancel the TIP on our old one.

Glad you got out with your dog and cat. Pets are important. Do you, like we do, travel with a cat carrier for just the emergency you had? Yes, it takes up valuable space, but we have always thought it worth it to make the odds better that our cat could grabbed and put in the crate if an emergency occurred.

carolgary1947, simply put renew your passport and you get a new passport number. You will not have any problem getting another TIP. The rest, VW & personal items, are just written off, lost cause. Move on & enjoy life. For less than $100, the price of renewing your passport, your can go back to Mexico and enjoy another adventure. Easier than wasting a lot more time without results!

That is what we did when we sold our old Motorhome without turning in the TIP. My time & peace of mind is worth more than all of the messing around trying to fix the Mexico paperwork. AND it is legal!

The passport number of the individual who was listed on the Temporary Import Permit will not be allowed to obtain another TIP in the future. Passport number is the ID so I worded it that way on purpose.

This is EXACTLY the reason why I was so adamant about NOT having your car "disappeared" in Mexico. Any problem with not surrendering the car permit on time needs two documents: One from the PFP or SSP, the second from the Ministerio Publico. You have GOT TO get that document of TIMELY EXIT FROM MEXICO at Banjercito before the TIP expires.

A proper document from PFP, SSP is worth a lot of weight with ADUANA. I don't know if Canadian Rainbirds or RonYVickie obtained official letters from either federal police agency, but these agencies hold a lot more water with regards to other federal agencies than does a document from a Ministerio Publico which is the district attorney for the municipio which is much like a "county".

When it doubt seek out the office of PGR which is the Federal Attorney's Office. These folks will not steer you wrong.

But it boils down to if your car permit expires and you cannot supply the car as proof or several of the aforementioned documents, your car permit status is officially screwed. Sorry to be so abrupt about it.

This forum has great help. I wish you could have contacted the forum when this first occurred. Many people here have personal experiences to share and many who know about the system and how it works.

Does leaving it this way in any way endanger future visits to Mexico for whoever's name the vehicle was registered in? Or is that not something that gets checked against passports when entering the Country?

Talleyhoe60 Thank you for the advice. Yes, I believe you are right and we will have to move on with much regret. But don't know what else we could have done at the time. We were in shock with only the smokey clothes on our backs and a dog and cat. Not even a toothbrush. Very sad. Trying not to think about it too much. We lost so much that we still have not recovered from what it took us many years to collect. Thank you again for responding.
