Vancouver Island: Port Hardy, Campbell River

Any suggestions? We're not into fishing. We're going to be three families with kids in RVs. We like to visit historical sites, landscapes, beaches.

For Port Hardy (or nearby) I found two so far: Scotia Bay Resort and Alder Bay Resort. Any suggestion which one of them? Other suggestions?

So far I have found nothing for Campbell River.

Living Forest seems a nice place in Nanaimo (where the ferry will stop).

We're thinking in visiting Ducan and the Martin Mars bombers so far.

Thanks!

Sounds like your plan is to take the ferry to Duke Point, I've done that route many (MANY) times (for work). It's a good ride and great views. That being said you might find that the Washington ferry is a better deal (cost wise) if you have an RV.
I would NOT take the ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo, as you will have to drive through the metro Vancouver area.

Nice! How long is the ferry to the Queen Charlotte Islands?

You need to check BC Ferries, Inside Passage. The site will give you all info in regards to stops, fees, reservations etc. When do you plan on going to BC?
  • I live in Campbell River and have camped all around it. Your best solution would be to PM me and tell me about your rigs and whether you want power, full hook ups, or boondocking. There are about 15 choices within an hour.

A lot depends on when you plan on being here, and whether you want open sun camping, forested sites, age of kids and activities with them.

Certainly Elk Falls Provincial Park is one of the best for easy hikes to the falls, and to the fish hatcheries too. If you want a swimming pool for the kids, or a huge sandy ocean beach to play on, they are all options.

A bit further away there is more provincial parks, they are bring your own water and the price reflects the amenities, but some are absolutely beautiful in good weather.
  • We spent quite a bit of time in the Port Hardy, Ucluelet and Tofino

    Ucluelet....aquarium, wild Pacific trail

    Tofino... whale watching

    Clayocuot....oyster festival

Port Hardy.... ferry for Queen Charlotte Islands, First Nations shops and galleries. (We had gold wedding rings made by a local artist), Hardy Boys, we chose at 4pm fresh crabs and halibut and had it fast frozen and shipped home. Over 200lbs were in our friends freezer by 10am the next morning in Ontario. You should try what they call Indian Candy. Eat outside great seafood overlooking the ocean . You can't not love Port Hardy.
