Vancouver Toll Bridge

I was down in the LA area and using a GPS to get me to Orange County. **** if the GPS didn't put me right on a toll road and once on, I couldn't get off and I didn't know that there was no collection booth at the other end. Since I was in a rental car, I figured one day I would get a bill, but I never did

We just used it last week. Enter your State/province and then your license plate number, and pick you vehicle type for the appropriate toll.

We paid $3.15 CDN with a VISA card for our CR-V

But we've seen lots of vehicles in the US with NO plates at all. Often only one on the back. In BC, we need one on front and rear. In Alberta, one only on the rear is okay.

FWIW, regarding licence plates, DW was born and raised in Alberta and she calls an Alberta plate a learners licence. Most Albertans don't live where there are mountains like we have in BC and they often drive super slow on curves and hills. :B

Coasting off of hill two MPH over the speed limit is illegal also - but my question is "what actually happens????"

A. Some sort of toll bridge security pulls you over
B. A gate drops and you can't proceed
C. The guards step out with their Uzis and wave you over
D. The .50 Caliber Brownings open up from behind the cement barricades
E. All of the above

In other words, has this actually happened to anyone - what happened to you.

In Ontario you are responsible for ensuring that your plate is clearly visible at all times, including for things like red light cameras, photo radar, and electronic tolling. Here is a couple of excerpts from the Ontario Highway Traffic Act;

Every number plate shall be kept free from dirt and obstruction and shall be affixed so that the entire number plate, including the numbers, is plainly visible at all times, and the view of the number plate shall not be obscured or obstructed by spare tires, bumper bars, any part of the vehicle, any attachments to the vehicle or the load carried.

The number plates shall not be obstructed by any device or material that prevents the entire number plates including the numbers from being identified by an electronic toll system.

The only two toll bridges are the Port Mann bridge from Surrey on the east side of the river to Port Coquitlam on the west side and the Golden Ears bridge from Langley on the south side of the river to Maple Ridge on the north.

If you are crossing the border at the Peace Arch crossing or the Pacific Highway crossing just to the east, you can drive up hwy 99 into Vancouver where you will cross over to North Vancouver or West Vancouver (separate cities) and then onto the highway that goes up to Whistler. No tolls along this route. Taking an RV through Vancouver would not be fun, but with a car it def. would be...

i wanted to go through whistler this summer on the way north.i spent hours looking and gave up and went through hope and up the Frazer river

Having only been around a few toll bridges, and they still had people taking the money, on the automatic ones, what happens if you don't have a front plate and the back plate is partially covered with bicycles?

As a note, unknowingly used a toll road down around Boulder, CO which had automatic scanners. The rental car company billed our credit card for the tolls about a month later.........

We don't have toll booths around here and two that do now have electronic tolling. If you are from the US and try to avoid payment when it arrives in the mail, not to worry, the gov't uses a US-based contractor to collect the payments. :)

If that's the new Port Mann bridge on the #1 hwy, there's been a lot of opposition to the toll, esp. from truckers. The truckers and others take a long detour around that bridge which has only made other routes clogged up. One of those detours, the Patullo Bridge, is now slated for replacement with a new toll bridge.

There is a new replacement/upgrade in the works for the George Massey tunnel on hwy 99 on the way from the border into Vancouver and it will also be tolled. DW takes that route to work every day and fortunately will be retired by the time it's finished.

In the not too distant future, you won't be able to get into Vancouver from the east or south without running into a toll bridge, unless coming from the east you could cross over Fraser River in Mission and travel along the north side of the river but that'd be a LOT slower. But taking an RV into Vancouver isn't the best of ideas unless going to Whistler or Vancouver Island.
