vehicle selection advice; 2006 Winnebago View 23J

Hello.

From people who have traveled South America as far as lower Argentina, or similar, could you tell me if having a slide is a deal breaker on vehicle selection? I've had some general advice not to have a slide, but don't know why or how important this is.

I'm full time in my fifth wheel with 5 slides, so I grasp RV life, but have never had a class c. I'm looking for a small class C for a 6-8 month adventure to South America. I want a diesel that will burn older diesel (NOT ultra low Sulphur diesel), so I'm looking pre-2007. Unless I'm unsuccessful finding a diesel, I do not want gas.

I'm looking at Mercedes Benz sprinters, the first T1N generation. Winnebago/Itasca has a model from 2006 that we like, which is the View 23J or Navion 23J respectively. Either is 23'5" long front bumper to rear of spare tire mounted on the rear.

It has a single dinette slide.

The View/Navion has enhanced appeal to us, because if there is anything left of it after South America, we'd ship that to Europe, rinse and repeat the trip in Europe. Thus, we are looking for a relatively lightweight, fuel efficient little c for these extended trip purposes.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks so much.

What will you do in South America if the slide sticks in the out position?

I assume I'd put in in manually. I haven't had to do this on any of mine in my current rig, but I know how to do it.

I wonder if slides can be jarred completely out of their track, such that the manual operation won't even work? Don't know?

Most advice in RVing South America include taking spare parts, so maybe I could just get a slide motor and take that. Labor down there isn't terribly hard to find, but parts are a nightmare, from what I've read so far.
  • I read on this site about slides broke, stuck, leak.I have a 2007 sprinter LTV, I,m camping don,t need it. IF I was stationary for months it might be nice.
