Virginia Highway system

We recently returned from a trip South. We kind of meandered across VA. and we will be returning for a more in depth trip concentrating on the Blue Ridge Region.
We passed many many interesting looking side roads that in my mind would be worth exploring.
It seems that every house has a standard green street sign designating their drive.How do I differentiate a low use town or county level or a public use area road from a private drive? I do not want to be the D Yankee that drives into somebodies dooryard!
This problem is not specific to VA.,I have been unsure in other areas also. I do know that in some parts of the country a purple paint band on a tree or post serves as a no trespassing symbol.

    I think the four numbered streets like 2106 might be a dead end street. Most through roads here are single, double, and three numbered streets...

    VA RT3 feeds 206 which has 611 and then 1201 going into my neighborhood. All the 1200 road signs are dead end streets. Having said that some are circle drives haha...

    We always have Google map available if we are worried about the streets.

    I live in VA and I've found that most streets have a green (or in some cases blue) street sign. If a street does not have a sign, then I would assume that it was private.

    In most places, a brown street sign is indicative of a private road. Normally, green street signs are public.
