Want to avoid DFW heading W how about 380 from I 30?

Would take I 20 around the south side of the Fort Worth/Dallas metroplex. US 380 is congested with many traffic lights.

380 between Greenville where you would exit I-30 and McKinney still has construction.

380 through downtown Denton is 'challenging' just go real slow with narrow lanes.

380 between Denton and Decatur is heavy construction.

That said - I've driven it pulling a 30 ft travel trailer in both directions several times.

I live 18 miles south of 380 on the east edge of the metroples - so sometimes it is a better choice headed east. I always use 380 to get to Camping World in Denton, and to get to I-35 headed north or head west out on 287 toward Amarillo.

But the post above is correct - I-20 around the bottom of DFW is the best thru route. I always use it when heading west toward Abilene even though it adds 25 miles to my trip.

When you cross Lake Ray Hubbard, get in the next to right lane, and into the right lane after crossing Belt-Line. Take I-635 South to I-20. Watch the speed. Mesquite is 60 mph.

When you get close to I-20 - be in the left lane. Weird interchange with US-175/I-20.

Watch out for folks on I-20 trying to cross three lanes of traffic in a half mile to get on US-175 toward downtown Dallas.

The rest of the drive is simple with no crazy intersections.

There is a section of construction near the I-35W junction south of FW and west for a few miles. Not bad.

I have driven straight through on I-30 while towing a few times. But I've been here for 27 years - and know which lane to be in for every interchange.

Do you need to go near DFW or I30? Look into I44 to Wichita Falls then US281 to I20.

Me too... on a Sunday it should not be real crowded typically.
Only that one tricky part mentioned above.
Should be pretty easy route.

Think he meant I 40

Ok I see I44 now did not look far enough north as it is off of I40. That is a possibility but a downside is more expensive with 4 axles on the toll road I44. Guess it also depends on the weather pattern whether St. Louis Springfield, Tulsa and Oklahoma City is better to go through than Memphis, Little Rock, Texarkana. Usually the Memphis route is better weather wise in Jan.

I-30 thru Dallas is never a good choice. Coming toward Dallas on I-30 take I-635 south to I-20, then I-20 west across the southern outskirts of Dallas and Ft Worth. Bypasses the worst parts of the whole metroplex.
I live just off of US 380. All newly rebuilt highway from Greenville to Denton, then a couple miles of older narrower 4 lane thru Denton. From Denton to Decatur they are rebuilding that highway. Lot of construction but really does not affect traffic flow much. Only problem with the route is traffic and traffic lights from east side of McKinney to Denton. 40 or more traffic lights in that 35 miles or so. About the time you get up to speed you hit another red light.
Knowing this area well I would take the I-30/I-635/I-20 route and do it on a weekend or between 10 am and 3 pm on a weekday.

Good information thanks it helps to know the best times to get through an area from the locals.

I would just take I-40 across.
Eliminate DFW ALL TOGETHER!
