WARNING US 101 In Seaside, OR Saturday 8/29 H2C relay!

Just a "Heads Up" to those of you that may be traveling on US 101 through Seaside Oregon. Saturday is the finish of the Hood to Coast relay and traffic through Seaside will be HEAVY to say the least. That is when the population of Seaside grows by about 18,000 runners and volunteers. Traffic on US 101 both north and south bound will be very heavy.
  • sunday is almost as bad because most family and friends that go down for the finish stay for night saturday . been there and tied it,gave up and went home

Glad to see you calling it a WARNING.....I got mixed up in that mess one time in a car...can't imagine pulling a rig!

The worst traffic is actually on HY 202 at exchange point 30, where the two vans of six runners each exchange running duties. Van #1 is done and headed for Seaside, Van #2 is waiting and runners trying to get a few hours of sleep before having to run the last six legs.
In the past we had to have the time keeper in Van #1 run the last mile to the exchange point, to beat the #6 runner from the same van the leg is only 5.3 miles, a 7 minute mile runs that in under 40 minutes. The traffic can backup for 1.5 miles or more.

You forgot US 26 from Mt Hood to Portland, and US30 from Portland to Astoria. From Friday early morning to late Saturday the route will be impossibly congested with walkers and runners. Hood to Coast has become a real monster!

That I left out, as while congested, not like the finish at Seaside! They do a great job of starting the slowest runners/walkers first and fastest last, so all show up in Seaside in about an eight hour window.

Runners do leave HY 30 just south of St. Helens.
I should add that from St. Helens to Seaside all running/walking is on back roads, and only affects local traffic.
They construct a temporary runner overpass in Seaside so that the runners don't affect traffic, but their support teams do!

If you are in the Seaside area, the finish is Great to Watch, as the whole team joins the runner of the last leg (leg 36) to cross the finish line on the beach!!!!
