washington DC to NYC route?

Hello:

We are planning on driving from Washington DC and scooting over to Atlantic City on our way north to Manhattan NY.

We are traveling with a 34' travel trailer.

What is the best route to travel from Washington DC toward Atlantic City?

Would you recommend driving along #9 north from Atlantic City to NYC, or heading back towards Philadelphia and getting onto the 295?

Is there a better route?

Are there routes to absolutely avoid?

Any recommendations are greatly appreciated!
  • You probably won't find Rt 9 to be an enjoyable ride, congestion, traffic lights, etc. As long as you're not traveling during rush hour, I'd stick with the Garden State Parkway. And yes, trailers can use the Garden State Parkway, but stay away from parkways in NY and CT.
  • Thanks for that tip. May I ask why you recommend avoiding the parkways in NY and CT?
  • "The following type vehicles are not permitted on the Parkways within the Parkway system, unless authorized under an agreement with the New York State Department of Transportation:
    (a) bicycles;
    (b) buses;
    (c) commercial;
    (d) golf carts;
    (e) hearses, except those operated by or for a licensed funeral director or undertaker while traveling to or from a funeral, interment, cremation, place of death or other destination for the acceptance and shipment of the body or remains of a deceased person;
    (f) house coaches;
    (g) motor-driven cycles;
    (h) school buses;
    (i) semitrailers;
    (j) snowmobiles;
    (k) tractors;
    (l) trailers;
    (m) trucks."
  • Trailers and RV's aren't allowed on the NY and CT parkways due to low bridges.
  • I agree with using the Garden State parkway.

    Also.....propane is NOT allowed in the tunnels in Baltimore. If you go north on I-95 use the Key Bridge. I personally like using US 50 to the Bay Bridge to US 301 to SR 896 then back to the Interstate and over the Delaware Memorial Bridge. Then US 40 to AC

    Can you please tell me approximately how far along 95N, from Washington DC, would I find the Key Bridge and US 50 etc.?

    Thanks

    I just read an earlier post which said the following:
    Yes, there is no propane at Baltimore harbor tunnels. You will need to take exit 49B Baltimore Beltway Inner Loop, then back to 95 North. This is a quote from Maryland Transit: "Fort McHenry Tunnel (I-95) or the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (I-895)" cannot carry in excess of 10 gallons propane. Your rv tank is larger than 10 gallons. We always take 695 Inner Loop.

    Is this an easier/better option?
