Watch that dip

For those headed to Alaska via the route through Calgary beware of one nasty dip in the northbound lane about 45 min north of Lethbridge.

It is a sleeper. The only warning of how severe it is are the skid marks trucks with raised tires have left on the road. We hit it at the speed limit & damaged the equaflex centerpoint suspension. Did not realize the damage had been done till we departed Lake Louise headed for Jasper.

With a little thought, ingenuity & luck we did a self repair & all seems well.

However, watch for that dip. It is a doozy & will rearrange everything inside your unit.

  • Nope, that's not us. That's a T-600 series KW. We're still in GP, if anyone needs advice, or a hand, or coffee.
  • Thankfully when we were parked at Whitecourt, AB on Thursday night, a gentleman from Grand Prairie and I were talking. He warned me about Ab. 43 going into Grand Prairie. There are some nasty dips. Some signed, some not. Daryl, you don't have, I believe, it was a "Pete" hooked up to a fiver for sale on the north side leaving G.P. do you?
  • And I thought you would have all those bumps flagged Sue, hope you all had a good spring so far, a little damp here, Johnny
  • Hit a bump on the west ring road leaving Edmonton, Alberta a couple of years ago. At the next stop the television fell to the floor when I opened the slides. I also attribute a broken shackle (one arm broken) to that bump. it wasn't discovered until we got home, which was 2000 miles later. We were lucky.
  • Within 30 miles of Whitehorse and north on the Alaska Highway, there are some new doozeys this year. Not all flagged.
  • We've had some fun learning that not all dips and bumps are visible. Two times we've tested our Road Kings on the IFS, with one time just tapping the bottoming out of the shocks against the stops...

I've had no problem driving many times 15-20KM below the posted speed limits. I make it a point to watch for traffic from behind, and I pro-actively look for safe passing areas and put my indicator on and slow down to let whomever is behind us by. If a trash stop, or the spread out rest stops available, I pull off to give them clear passage.

Not in a race, enjoy the slower pace, and it allows more time to slow down and stop to enjoy/avoid the animals.

Tire marks, scratches in pavement, wheel hubs, rear axles, and brown streaks from the passenger side of the road - are all indications to SLOW DOWN AND PREPARE:)!

    Drive safe, have fun,
    Smitty
