Then definitely get started in August because Yellowstone, Rockies in Montana and northern Wyoming, sometimes gets a first taste of winter around Labor Day. If from DC, you work your way down to Savannah, and come back across the deep South (Between I-20 and the Gulf Coast) you should be able to get to S California on the southern route before winter hits anywhere, though the Texas high plains (toward El Paso) has had rare early winter storms. El Paso is still usually the safest place to cross the Rockies in winter, with respect to weather.
