West to East Coast & back

What time of the year are the best weather conditions to cross the Country from West Coast to the East Coast? We are planning on leaving Ca. the first of Aug. and return end of end of Oct.

    Lot of ground to cover for roughly 12 weeks! We went to OK fall of 12 and were gone 8 weeks from So. Cal. and that wasn't long enough.
