if you're just taking the truck, you can do Beartooth Pass to Red Lodge, but it will take some time..that's a beautiful drive, but lots of curves and then a series of switchbacks down the side of a very high mountain.
But you can come back through Cody and go back into Yellowstone from there.
You will need the two days, maybe more if your genealogy research takes more time that you expect.
If you want to read a really good history of Sheridan WY over to Red Lodge..all that high plains country up to Miles City, etc. it's called Where the Rivers Run North, by Sam Morton. Lots of names mentioned in it.
